Origin Story
Vibrant wax-print cotton fabric embraced across West Africa. Each print tells a story — from political commentary to expressions of love and identity.
How It's Made
Ankara is produced using a wax-resist dyeing technique. Molten wax is applied to cotton fabric in patterns, then dyed. The wax prevents dye from penetrating the covered areas, creating the distinctive bold patterns. Modern production uses industrial printing.
Cultural Significance
Though the technique originated in Indonesia and was commercialised by Dutch traders, Ankara was embraced and made distinctly African. Specific prints are named and carry social messages — some are reserved for celebrations, others convey proverbs.
Styling Tips
Ankara is incredibly versatile — from tailored blazers and jumpsuits to bags and shoes. Mix prints confidently, or pair with solid colours for balance. Bold Ankara headwraps are a statement on their own.
